Sustainable Living
Food Forests, Edible Landscaping &
Sustainable Agriculture
Most of our fruits and vegetables are flown in, or container shipped from California's
West coast.
A lot of that food is raised with Chemicals and Pesticides.
To protect it from spoilage, it is prematurely harvested and chemically treated.
Fruits and vegetables are radiated to kill pests like fruit flies coming into our State.
Chemical fertilizers were discovered accidentally in the late 1800's by German
scientists, who were creating chemical warfare.
Little did they know, that their discoveries would rage chemical warfare and havoc on
our soils for more than a hundred years.
Chemical fertilisers contain high levels of chemical sodiums which are
concentrated salts, detrimental to a living soil.
Micro organisms and earthworms can't exist in such a chemical environment.
That means our supermarket food is grown in dead soil.
University studies show that organically raised produce, grown in a living soil,
contains 90+% more bioflavenoids than chemically raised produce.
Bioflavenoids contain the anti-oxidants that we need to stay young and healthy.
It is well documented that chemically raised foods are the causes of many human
health problems.
Farmers in California are battling serious water shortages as well as their State's
financial crisis.
This will affect the cost, future availability, and quality of our food.
For reasons stated above, it doesn't make sense to import produce grown
thousands of miles away.
As part of our efforts to stir our islands towards the path of health and sustainability,
we encourage everybody to grow food in their own backyards and to start farming
organically.
It is easy and gratifying to create your own Food Forest by turning your existing
landscape into an Edible Landscape. In a short period of time, you can be producing
natural organic food in your own backyard, no matter how big or small your garden
is.
If you are interested in learning how to create a Food Forest and grow food
naturally, we invite you to join a Nikodesigns Edible Landscaping workshop.
Composting and mulching are the key to feeding the organisms in
the soil, they are like yoga for the earth.
Organic 'living soil', supports millions of microorganisms and
earthworms.
Adding compost, mulch and any kind of organic matter, including
animal manures to your soil, are the key to successful organic
farming.
Growing nitrogen-fixing trees and leguminous cover crops like
beans, peas, clover and buckwheat to name a few, also
contributes nitrogen and carbonaceous matter necessary to feed
the soil's microorganisms.
All that green matter ends up into the soil further feeding the
creatures.
Building soil fertility goes hand in hand with controlling pest
damage.
Therefor we strife to keep a balance between beneficial and pest
insects in the orchard and the vegetable garden.
To attract beneficial predator insects above ground
to prey on pest bugs, we plant insectaries of nectar and pollen
producing plants to provide them with a supportive habitat such
as yarrow, alyssum, cilantro, radish, carrot, and so on.
Re. Seed, we strongly recommend the use of Old World,
open-pollinated Heirloom seed varieties.
They will supply you with an indefinite source of reliable plant
material.
The combination of rich organic soil and a bio-diverse plant
community creates an environment that is inhospitable to
pathogens, while increasing plant resistance to disease.
Healthy plants plus natural prophylaxis to harmful organisms
equals chemical free disease control.
Now you know what to do if you inherit problem soil.
Once your soil returns to its natural cycle, all that remains, is to
check the soil for mineral and nutrient deficiencies and amend
them as necessary.
To raise the cycle of sustainable agriculture to a higher
level, you can raise chickens to supply yourself with fresh
eggs and a good source of natural fertiliser.
Then you use that chicken manure to enrich your compost
and raise earthworms.
Earthworms produce worm castings, the world's best
natural fertilizer which you feed directly to your plants.
In return you feed earthworms to your chickens and your
fish.
That leads us to Aquaponics;
Fish like Tilapia or catfish are raised in a pond or a tank.
The water, that contains their waste or natural fertiliser, is
pumped into shallow tanks that contain floating beds.
Here the vegetables grow above, with their roots below the water.
That water, after feeding the vegetables, now cleaner,
is returned to the fish tank.
Produce grown this way is 100% organic, of higher quality and
grows faster than any soil raised crops.
It takes 90 % less water to grow vegetables this way.
This is the natural cycle of permaculture.

You can learn Aquaponics or how to grow food naturally, hands on, by joining a Nikodesigns Edible Landscaping workshop at Kaimanu Botanical Gardens, the ultimate Food Forest.
Every second Saturday of the month.

Permaculture, Bill Mollison created this term in the 70's,
(Permanent Agriculture) is the epicenter of sustainable
farming.
Healthy, living soil means healthy microbiology.
Composting, mulching and practicing bio-diversity in
farming versus mono-cropping eliminates the need for
chemical fertilizers and harmful pesticides.
There is nothing more gratifying then living a completely sustainable lifestyle.
The security that comes from knowing that we have put the means and
know-how we possess to work, to fully sustain ourselves and our families in
every way, satisfies our basic, primal survival instincts.
We can accomplish that, which has eluded modern man up to now;
reduce or eliminate our carbon footprint completely.
By doing so, we help restore the natural balance of our planet.
'You must be the change you wish to see in this world', M. Gandhi.
Here is how we can do it;
- Build your new home with renewable building materials such as Bamboo.
- Become energy independent by utilizing nature's free energy resources;
SOLAR, WIND and WATER.
- Grow your own food; Create a Food Forest with Edible Landscaping &
Sustainable Agriculture.
Adopt the ZERO MILE philosophy.
Build with renewable resources
